School has started and I really love back to school DIYs because it appeals to my eternal love for all things stationery. And, fun fact: I also love to draw. Combine these 2 things and we have a DIY Abstract Face Desk Accessory Cup. I’ve been so inspired by all the Matisse-inspired artwork and DIYs that have been popping up on Pinterest. Read on to find out how you can draw an abstract face and then transfer it to on to an acrylic pencil and pen holder!
What You Need – DIY Abstract Face Desk Accessory Cup
- Silhouette Studio (there is a free version!)
- Silhouette cutting machine (I used my CAMEO)
- White vinyl (I purchased and used the vinyl and tools from this Silhouette Vinyl Starter Kit). Another option is to just buy the vinyl on its own…my last post has a great deal that ends September 15th!
- Black ink pen
- Blank white printer paper
- Acrylic pencil and pen holder
- camera (I used my iPhone camera)

Instructions – DIY Abstract Face Desk Accessory Cup
- Research Matisse facial drawings to get an idea of how you want to draw your face
- Using the black pen and blank paper, draw your face and thicken the lines
- Lay your drawing down on a flat light surface and take a picture of the face
- Load your image on to Silhouette Studio
- Use the Trace function to trace your image
- Clean up any stray points using the point-editing tool (double click the image and you will see all the points)
- Once you are satisfied, resize the image so that it will fit on your acrylic pencil holder
- Load your vinyl onto your Silhouette cutting machine and send your image to cut using vinyl settings
- Once cut, unload and peel away the negative space of your shape, so that the diamond is left (the starter kits comes with a hook that is very helpful)
- Use the transfer paper to transfer your vinyl to your acrylic pencil holder (the starter kits comes with a scraper that is very helpful)
All you need to do now is place it on your desk and load it up with pretty pencils and pens! It was fun drawing again and I hope you had fun too. Let me know how your modern desk accessory turned out!
